St. John Commandery, No. 3 Donates Thanksgiving Dinners |
For the past two years, St. John Commandery, No. 3, in Jackson, Mississippi, has raised money to benefit the efforts of Operation Shoestring to provide Thanksgiving Dinner for the Central Jackson Community. Sir Melvin E. Butler, Captain General, is the Chairman of the Community Services Committee and has established a working relationship with Operation Shoestring. Operation Shoestring is one of two charities supported by St. John Commandery, No. 3. Operation Shoestring offers programs for children in kindergarten through the 5th grade. Project KIDS provides tutoring, literacy development, and cultural arts instruction. Led by certified teachers, it offers neighborhood children a safe harbor after school and during the summer, while helping parents to stay at work with the assurance that their children are receiving quality supervision and care. In addition, Operation Shoestring offers parenting and adult literacy programs. 78 families participated in family literacy and parenting classes in 2006. These courses help adults and children gain the skills to thrive in school and the job market, while also teaching parents how to teach their children and how to operate as a family. 25 adults took the GED program last year.
Other services include:
FOOD PANTRY: over 1,200 mothers, senior citizens, and disabled persons received food boxes in 2006.
CHIP AND MEDICAID ENROLLMENT for children partnering with the University Medical Center and the Jackson Medical Mall.
UTILITY ASSISTANCE AND CRISIS REFERRALS
NEW ARTS AND EDUCATION FACILITY: We converted our old gym into a wonderful new arts and education space.
