It’s Never Too Late to Say “Thank You”

“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks.”   Luke 17:15-16

The Gospel of Luke gives us a narrative account of Jesus’ last days before his entry into Jerusalem.  Jesus and his disciples were traveling between Samaria and Galilee when they encountered ten lepers.  These men, because of Judaic custom were outcasts of society and were forbidden to interact with anyone other than the diseased ridden citizens of the region.

They saw Jesus and his disciples in a village and they all cried out “Master, have mercy upon us!”  Jesus instructed these lepers to go show themselves to the priest.  As they went their bodies were cleansed of the disease.  Jesus and his disciples continued on their way and from nowhere, one of the lepers after seeing that he was healed returned and fell at the feet of Jesus and glorified God.
While all ten lepers, asked for mercy and received the miracle of healing, only one returned to give thanks.  Jesus commanded the man to rise and stated that his faith has made him whole.  It is the two cycle process of asking in faith and giving thanks which completes our faith and makes us whole.

Jesus’ inquiry into the whereabouts of the other nine lepers who were healed is indicative of our own fallacies.  All too often in our lives, we  collectively and individually pray for and receive blessings from God, and more often than not, we forget to give thanks and glory to the giver of all good and perfect gifts.  While the miracle of being healed with every step they took may have been quite overwhelming for these lepers, nevertheless, the blessing should never overshadow the gratefulness and reverence we owe individually to God.

Remember, it is never too late to give thanks to God for his mercy, grace and blessings!
