Who is He to You? That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil. 2: 10-11. In the Gospel of Mark, Christ asked his disciples, “Whom do men say that I am?”. The answers varied among prophets but when Christ asked “But whom say ye that I am?”, Peter answered, “Thou art the Christ”. It is Christ upon whom the Apostle Paul expands the definition of who Christ is. Paul argues to the church at Phillippi that Christ made no reputation for himself, yet shed divinity, and took upon himself the form of a servant. He took the form of a man, and bade obedience to God the father, even unto the death of the Cross. After his resurrection and ascension, God the father exalted him and Christ regained divine sovereignty. It is before the sovereign Christ, whose name is Jesus, that every knee shall bow and that every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Paul’s letter to the Romans tells us that none of us live to ourselves nor do we die to ourselves. Rather, we live and die unto the Lord, and to this end, Christ died, rose and ascended that He shall be Lord of both the living and the dead. It was in the name of Jesus, that empowered disciples of the early church to cast out demons, heal the sick and face death for the sake of the Gospel of the risen Christ. It was St. Bernadine who inscribed the letters IHS, an abbreviation for Ihesus, on a placard and it was hailed as a sign of peace. We are told over 700 times in the New Testament alone that Jesus is Lord! Who is He to you?
